Did you know you can prevent disease with minerals?
They are fascinating. And often forgotten. This week we are highlighting a key player: Potassium.
Potassium is a VIP mineral.
It can transform your health. Want to read more? Check out an instagram post here.
But there is one area in potassium’s realm of power that I think could benefit you the most.
Men die at a younger age from this than women.
Women experience greater occurrence of this after menopause.
50 % of all deaths in westernized society are linked to this underlying cause.
What is it? Atherosclerosis.
Atherosclerosis is a fancy word for a term you’ve likely heard before, “Thickening of the arteries.” We do not want it. It is much like the inside of a pipe being clogged with build up.
It can lead to stroke, heart disease, and high blood pressure.
It is a chronic inflammatory disease of the arteries, caused and perpetuated by many nutrition and lifestyle actions. Inflammation can stem from many sources. (see blog post)
Rather than going down the rabbit hole with you of all the things that lead to this devastating condition (although you know I’d love to, so email me any questions), rather let's talk about ONE thing we all can be doing to help prevent atherosclerosis.
Eat a diet rich in potassium.
Research shows that diets high in potassium help to prevent atherosclerosis, but the means by which it does so isn’t known. (Check out the fascinating image below.)
So what can we do? What should we do?
There's a lot of opinions and ways to help heal atherosclerosis, so let's look at one thing we know for sure.
Eat more potassium rich foods.
What are some good sources?
One of my all time favorites: coconut water. You can dilute coconut water into your large water container to add potassium to your day!
Recently, I’ve tried a new brand, Taja, and I’ve loved it! Always look for zero added sugar!
This is just one way to improve your wellness. Often it’s the small things that make the biggest difference.
Do yourself a favor, and those you love a favor: Eat more potassium.
