In the US, 10 million people over the age of 50 have osteoporosis (1).
What's the answer to weak, brittle bones?
Many people think it's just adding in more calcium. After all, we need calcium for strong bones, right?
Think again.
Maybe this scenario sounds familiar to you.
My grandmother wanted to have strong bones. She drank milk daily and ate a diet high in calcium. However, her bones were found to be very weak. Especially after she suffered a fall that lead to a decline in her overall health.
So what was missing? What do I wish I could have told her?
You can take all the calcium supplements in the world, eat all of the calcium rich foods, but that will not fix osteoporosis. Healthy bones require much more than calcium alone. And in many cases, calcium is being taken without vitamin K. You need Vitamin K to absorb calcium.
Here are 3 things I do as a nurse to have healthy bones, that you can, too.
➡️Supplement with magnesium: while most people only focus on Calcium, we actually need magnesium for strong bones, too. And it’s very hard to get enough of it in our diet. Here's a link to the one I use.
➡️Eat enough food and enough protein: chronically dieting leads to low estrogen among women, even prior to menopause. We need estrogen for strong bones. So if you want to age well, give your body what it needs now. Eat enough food to fuel nourishment and especially enough protein.
➡️Bodyweight and weighted workouts: strong muscles build strong bones. If you’re not focusing on muscle growth, our bones can become neglected, too. This is one reason I post two workouts a week on my social media ➡️ Keep moving!
These are simple steps.
And a good place to start.
Preventing disease and aging well requires taking a step back and assessing the full picture. And strong bones require more than calcium alone.
