The real reason most people fail to maintain what they accomplish on their health journey.

“We are like eggs at present. And you cannot go on indefinitely being just an ordinary, decent egg. We must be hatched or go bad.” C.S. Lewis

One of the hardest parts about working towards a goal is embracing the struggles that the path demands.

We would like to think that becoming our healthiest self is easy, but in order to make it less stressful for you, let me tell you, it’s not.

Another aspect rarely discussed is that hitting your goal is only half the battle (or in my opinion, about 30% of the battle). What do I believe is the greatest hurdle? Holding 70% of the struggle?

Maintaining your goal.

When we reach for something we have the drive, the vision to obtain it. Just like reaching for a glass you need out of a cabinet, but if it is out of reach, you’ll find a way to do it. Maybe you’ll grab a stool, or stand on the counter top. It’s exciting. It’s also easier to create a plan with a vision of where you are going.

However, once you have that glass in your hand, it’s less exciting. You’ve hit your goal. Now what? You continue on with your life, with everything in your reach.

How boring.

That is why maintaining results is very challenging. It’s less exciting, but it's equally tedious.

Take weight loss for example. If you hit your goal weight it’s a victory. Then what do you do? Many people return to their former habits. Incorporate more calories as a result - they have had a victory after all.

But what no one will tell you about health and wellness is that it is a lifelong hurdle.

Just like hitting your goals takes changes, so does maintaining them. The rules still apply. Fast food is still bad for you. Discipline is still required. Movement still matters. Your mentality still can make or break your success.

So what should we do?

Start at the source.

Specifically your foundation.

Just like the bible tells us, if you choose to build a house on sand, your house will not last long. Rather, if you build your house on a sturdy foundation, you can weather any storm. (Matthew 7:24-25)

Your habits are your foundation. Your daily food choices. Your daily movement. Your daily mentality.

The second kicker?

Like I mentioned earlier, building that foundation is not easy. It takes sacrifice and a cold shower sometimes to keep going.

Just like a seed that has to die in order to blossom, to grow, and to someday become a fruit bearing tree, on the path to creating our foundation to health and wellness, we must change.

And change is hard. But it is doable.

What are you working on changing these days? If you feel stuck, ask yourself, are you an egg that’s moving towards being a rotten, bad egg? Or are you about to be hatched? In life, it’s one or the other.

Embrace the change that edifying your life requires and reap the rewards.
